One more idea: let users choose the recording quality in Settings, e.g. “WAV (original) / AAC 64 kbps / AAC 32 kbps”. Keep WAV as the default, so anyone who needs full quality can always switch back. I tried AAC 32 kbps on a 17-second dictation: 549 KB became 71 KB, and it plays fine in History.
Great app, thank you! One request: please add compression for stored recordings. Every dictation is kept as an uncompressed WAV, about 1.9 MB per minute of speech. With daily use, 5,000 recordings easily pile up in a few months, and that is around 3 GB. The app already has everything needed: it reads m4a, and History plays AAC files fine. So it’s only about saving recordings compressed, for example AAC at 32 kbps with Apple’s built-in AVFoundation. That is about 7x smaller with no noticeable loss for speech. An option like “Save recordings as: WAV / m4a”, or compressing them after transcription, would solve it. Retention doesn’t help when you want to keep your history.
This would be amazing.
Update: I also tried Opus at 16 kbps on the same 17-second dictation. 549 KB became 34 KB, 16x smaller than WAV and half the size of AAC 32, and the quality is still great for speech. It plays fine in History too. So my favorite option would be Opus. A setting like “Save recordings as: WAV / AAC / Opus” would be perfect, with WAV as the default so anyone can always switch back.
